  • 2016 Voter Guide Includes Statewide, Federal, General Assembly and Local Elections
    Updated On: Nov 306, 2016
The Local 391 voter guide includes recommendations for statewide offices, Congressional, General Assembly, and local elections.

Early voting starts Thursday, October 20 across North Carolina and Election Day is November 8.  Many Local 391 members are inquiring as to who the Union recommends and we are providing that list here in the 2016 Voter Guide for Local 391.

"I'm not one to tell anyone how to vote," said Local 391 President Mike McGaha.  "But this Union is providing a list of vetted candidates we see as positive for Teamsters Local 391 and working families.  Whether members vote for candidates on this list or not, we encourage Local 391 to vote for whoever they think is best for the job."

McGaha said his officers and business agents participate in two processes that builds Local 391's 2016 Voter Guide (attached below).  "We interview candidates in conjunction with the NC AFL-CIO and we conduct interviews as Teamsters when appropriate," he said.  "Most of the time, we agree with the AFL-CIO, but sometimes we make endorsements that are different."

Secretary-Treasurer Vernon Gammon pointed to Congressman Walter Jones' work to oppose the omnibus pension bill in 2015 that would have hurt Teamsters as reason alone to support the conservative Republican.  "This Union is not here to prop up one political party over the other, but to support working families and our members," he said.  "We will support Congressman Jones because he supports us.  We will support state representative Nelson Dollar, another Republican, because he supports our public school members."

Local 391's long term initiative is to build a pro labor majority that transcends political affiliation, according to Recording Secretary Rachel Eitzen, who spends time lobbying for Local 391 members at the General Assembly.

"Majorities come and go, but workers' issues remain no matter who is in charge," said Eitzen.  "We want to work and support candidates who support our issues."

Vice President Rick Armstrong reminded members that the Local 391 2016 Voter Guide is just that, a guide.  "We know that we have members with varying political beliefs and it's that diversity that we are proud of in Local 391," he said.  "The important thing is to vote and let your voice be heard."

Attached is the 2016 election voting guide for Local 391 members and their families.  This voting guide, including its content and design, is not coordinated with any candidate or candidate committees.
