  • House Specifies Public School Bus Drivers for Largest Raise in History Thanks to Local 391 Advocacy
    Updated On: Jun 156, 2017

Local 391 is proud to announce that the House is proposing the largest pay raise for bus drivers ever and it's because of the advocacy of this Union. A huge thanks to House Chairman Nelson Dollar (R-Wake) for listening to our concerns and for carving out bus drivers in the budget, the first time we've ever had this distinction.

Under the House proposal, other support personnel in the public schools, including custodians, cafeteria workers, bus monitors, and other positions receive a $1000 flat increase.

"Representative Dollar met with Local 391 multiple times over the last 9 months about this provision," said Recording Secretary Rachel Eitzen.  "Many evenings we sat in his conference room with him and we could not be happier with his work to get this provision in the budget, a provision that would be the greatest pay raise for bus drivers ever."

Under the terms of the provision, public school bus drivers would receive an 8% pay raise in 2017-2018 and another 8% raise is 2018-2019 (that would be compounded by 16%).  Rep. Dollar also included a provision to study pay for public school bus drivers.

President Mike McGaha said he was thrilled to learn of the raise and appreciates Rep. Dollar working with Local 391 to create good policy and budgets.

"At a time when it seems our country is divided over politics and ideology, it's refreshing to see someone like Representative Dollar find common ground with working families and to do what is right," McGaha said.  "I will be the very first to stand up and say that Representative Dollar is a good man, a fair legislator, and a friend to this Union."

Of course, it's important to remember that our fight is not over! We must now work with Rep. Dollar and the NC House to advocate for this line-item in the final budget, which will be negotiated with the Senate in June.

President McGaha encourages all Local 391 crafts to help our public school workers by thanking Rep. Dollar and his incredible staff for working so hard to get bus drivers specifically designated in the House budget for what would be the largest pay increase ever for this classification of employees.

Local 391 members can email him at nelson.dollar@ncleg.net and simply thank him for what he did in the House budget for public school bus drivers.

"You don't have to be a bus driver to be appreciative," said McGaha. "Low pay anywhere affects all of us, especially when it's our brothers and sisters. You would be doing so much to help Local 391 as we fight for public school bus drivers."
