Updated On: Aug 05, 2019
The Raleigh Police Protective Association and the Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association announced today a Raleigh mayoral candidate forum for Tuesday, August 27 at 7PM at the Teamsters Local 391 Union Hall at 6317 Angus Drive in Raleigh. The event is open to the media and the public.
The forum will include mayoral candidates Mary Ann Baldwin, Charles Francis, and Caroline Sullivan. All three are confirmed attendance at the forum. No other mayoral candidates were invited to participate in the forum.
“Raleigh municipal elections are incredibly important to Raleigh firefighters and police officers,” said RPFFA President Shawn Burns and RPPA President Matt Cooper in a joint statement. “Raleigh’s next mayor, along with the new Raleigh City Council, will be the leaders we turn to for answers about our pay, recruitment and retention, and workplace safety. This is our opportunity to determine who would be best at the job.”
Burns and Cooper said Raleigh citizens have a stake in the race as well. “Learning the mayoral candidates’ positions on public safety issues is why both organizations thought it was important to include the public,” the said. “Raleigh citizens expect public safety and they deserve a mayor who will make public safety a priority.”
RPPA and RPFFA will make a decision about endorsements in the Raleigh mayoral contest after the August 27 screening. Election day is Tuesday, October 8.
The Raleigh Police Protective Association is the law enforcement division of Teamsters Local 391. The Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association is an affiliate of the Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics of North Carolina and the International Association of Fire Fighters.
